With its roots in the
seventeenth century the Naval base still fulfils many of the functions for
which it had originally been established. The dockyard continues to produce
warships and the Navys Band and the sailing sloops are but two examples
of the living traditions in this World Heritage town. These traditions and
the remarkable historical continuity are of primary importance for the future
existence of Karlskrona as a World Heritage Site. Buildings and the physical
environment having been preserved as far as possible, Stumholmen has now become
one of the most attractive districts in Karlskrona.
Numerous organisations and individuals have worked together with the World
Heritage venture. These include the Municipality of Karlskrona, the County
Administrative Board, the Naval Museum, the County Museum, the Navy, the National
Property Board, the Kockums-Karlskrona Dockyard, and the Skärva Estate.
